Every card starts as a Wikipedia article. This page says where the words and pictures come from, under which licences, and how to ask for a change.

How cards are made

Every card is made from one Wikipedia article in one language edition. Nobody writes card text by hand, and article text is never machine-translated.
  1. An article

The card shows a short lead excerpt, shortened and reformatted. What changed is marked on the card, with a link to the article and to the exact revision.

  2. Three numbers

Fame comes from public page views, depth from the length of the article, influence from the links that point to it.

  3. A rarity

Rarity follows a published method, the same for every card.

  4. A frozen snapshot

Cards are minted from a catalog snapshot that is frozen before it opens. A later edit to an article doesn't change a card that was already minted.

Catalog snapshots

A snapshot is the frozen list of cards that packs draw from. Old snapshots stay listed for good, because a card keeps answering to the snapshot it was minted from.
